Worship Guilds

While all who gather for worship, by virtue of their prayers and presence, are participants in the liturgy of the church, some feel called to a distinct leadership role in this sacred aspect of the parish's mission and ministry. There are many opportunities, both visible and behind the scenes, for those who wish to serve in this way.

On Sundays, such opportunities include service as an acolyte, lector, and usher. During the week, lay volunteers serve as officiants at the Daily Office - Morning and Evening Prayer - in the Chapel of Saint Jude. In addition, two important groups of volunteers, the Altar Guild and the Flower Guild, offer countless hours of time and talent as they prepare the sanctuaries, altars, vessels, and vestments, as well as arrange flowers for the liturgy.

If you are interested in any of these opportunities for ministry, or have questions, please contact the Parish Office. You will then be put in touch with the clergy person or lay volunteer who oversees and provides training for each.

Young acolytes with the processional cross and torches

Acolyte

Uttered more than twenty times by Christ himself, the Greek word “akoloutheo” means to walk with or to accompany. Acolytes literally lead us into and out of worship, bearing a cross, torch, or thurible in procession. They also assist the clergy at the altar during celebrations of the Holy Eucharist. Children, youth, and adults alike serve as acolytes.

Three parishioners in purple robes

Altar Guild

Members of the Altar Guild support the liturgical life of the parish by preparing the sanctuaries and altars for all services held at Christ Church. The Altar Guild cares for hangings and linens, sacred vessels, and vestments. Training is provided.

A lay officiant reading the office in the chapel

Daily Office Officiant

At Christ Church, everything we do begins and ends with prayer. This is central to our identity as a community of faith. We therefore gather each weekday to pray the office of Morning Prayer. Members of the clergy and laity share in the leadership of these brief, beautiful services. Training is provided.

Two Flower Guild members with a bouquet

Flower Guild

Members of the Flower Guild create floral arrangements for Sunday services (except during Lent), and for the liturgies of Christmas, Holy Week, Easter, etc. Special floral decorations are typically made for baptisms, weddings, and funerals.

A reader at the lectern

Lectors Guild

A lector is a member of the congregation who reads one or more of the appointed scriptural passages during the liturgy. Training is provided.

Ushers passing the offering plate along a pew

Usher

An usher is a volunteer who greets worshipers as they enter the church. Ushers distribute service leaflets, answer questions of visitors and newcomers, collect and present financial contributions at the offertory, and assist parishioners to and from the altar during the administration of Holy Communion. Training is provided.
